This project will be a simulation for high school students in the Santa Clarita Valley. The simulation will provide participants with an identity that includes a career and salary. Participants will visit booths that offer essential and non-essential goods and will learn to live within their means. Booths will be hosted by Santa Clarita businesses. The goal will be to end the simulation with a positive bank account.
Imagine this…
Starting at age 22 you make the sacrifice to start investing $6,000/year until you reach age 29. Then you stop investing. Will you have enough saved for retirement?
Now consider an alternative scenario…
You decide to party hard in your 20s, travel as much as you can, then settle down at 30. You start investing $6,000/year until you reach age 67. That’s 37 years of investing versus 7. Who do you think has more money in the end?
The disciplined investor who saved from age 22 to 29 will have a whopping $2.2 million at age 67 whereas the “enjoy life while you’re young” investor will come up short at $2.0 million.
How many of you would have made the sacrifice in your 20s knowing that you’d only have to save for 7 years to enjoy a comfortable retirement?
A review of financial literacy conducted by the Milken Institute in 2018 found that many young adults in the US lack basic financial knowledge. Our goal is to provide some support to this need.
THE DEAL…
Get Real is an in-person game that will show our young adult community members how much their living expenses will cost, and the amount of money they will need to earn to pay for them.
This event will give teens and young adults a sample experience of managing a budget, while having fun. We will pressure them to spend money they don’t have as real life marketing will do in the real-world.

THE FORMAT
Participants will be provided with fake indentities that assign a career and salary. They’ll visit booths to purchase living essentials with the goal of staying within their budget.
Booths will be hosted by local businesses. If you would like to host a boooth, please contact us.
Participants will be presented with random unexpected life events that they must manage.
Goal of the game is to end with positive monthly cash flow.
